Azanilvet® is a neuroleptic sedative specifically indicated for pigs. Its use is recommended for regrouping, postpartum stress management, transport, and anesthetic premedication of pigs.

  • Regrouping: In fattening pigs and weaned piglets, the use of Azanilvet® is recommended 15 to 20 minutes before regrouping animals, as it prevents, delays, and reduces the duration and frequency of aggression for up to 2 hours post-application. In boars, the use of Azanilvet® 15 to 20 minutes before regrouping reduces the intensity and violence of aggression for at least 4 hours post-administration.
  • Postpartum stress management: Administering Azanilvet® to sows at the time of placenta expulsion helps control postpartum stress in the mother, thus improving colostrum distribution, reducing the incidence of diarrhea, and achieving a higher weaning weight in piglets from treated mothers.
  • Pig transport: The administration of Azanilvet® allows for a reduction in mortality and weight loss in fattening pigs caused by transport stress.
  • Premedication for anesthesia: Administering Azanilvet® prior to anesthesia provides effective sedation, resulting in improved induction and duration of anesthesia. Its effect is comparable to or superior to that of other pre-anesthetics, allowing for proper animal handling during various surgical procedures.
The sedative effect in pigs begins approximately 15 to 20 minutes after intramuscular administration and lasts for 2 to 4 hours, depending on the dose used.

Deep intramuscular.

Use a long hypodermic needle and administer the injection as close as possible to the back of the ear, perpendicular to the skin. Administer aseptically.

Administer in a single dose. The dosage varies depending on the indication for use:

Regrouping:

  • Pigs and piglets: 1 mL/20 Kg (equivalent to 2 mg/Kg).
  • Boars: 0.5 mL/20 Kg (equivalent to 1.0 mg/Kg).

Postpartum stress management: 1 mL/20 Kg (equivalent to 2 mg/Kg).

Transport of pigs: 0.2 to 0.3 mL/20 Kg (equivalent to 0.4 to 0.6 mg/Kg).

Premedication for anesthesia: 1 mL/20 Kg (equivalent to 2 mg/Kg).

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid use in very cold places, due to the risk of cardiovascular collapse secondary to peripheral vasodilation.
  • Azaperone does not replace appropriate anesthesia or analgesia.
  • Azanilvet® should be administered in quiet environments to minimize or eliminate possible unwanted effects.

Azaperone potentiates the action of general anesthetics, so the dose of these should be reduced when Azaperone is used as anesthetic premedication.

  • Do not administer intravenously, due to the presentation of a significant excitatory phase with cardiovascular effects.
  • Do not administer to overexcited animals, as it increases the possibility of unwanted effects.
  • Do not administer to pregnant females.

At therapeutic doses, the use of azaperone can cause hypothermia, hypotension, and cardiorespiratory depression in pigs. Additionally, and generally in the presence of stressful environments, other effects may occur, such as salivation, panting, piling up, muscle tremors, disorientation, and excitation, all of which are transient. In boars, therapeutic doses of azaperone (1.0 mg/kg) can cause temporary penile relaxation with possible penile damage. This effect is more frequent in cases of overdose.

While adverse effects can occur at therapeutic doses, azaperone overdose, especially when administered in stressful environments, significantly increases the likelihood of these effects.
In boars, overdose can more frequently cause temporary penile relaxation, with potential damage to the penis.

Meat: 6 days.
